Young Australian Faces Charges for Allegedly Attaching Googly Eyes on ‘Cast in Blue’ Sculpture

A teenager from Australia has faced legal proceedings after allegedly vandalizing a large blue sculpture of a legendary being by affixing googly eyes to it.

Amelia Vanderhorst, 19 years old, participated via phone at the local court in the state of South Australia on that day, charged with one count of damaging property.

In a statement at the moment of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that surveillance video captured a individual putting artificial eyes on the artwork, which residents have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.

Ms Vanderhorst made no plea and told the court she was unwell, as reported by media sources, with the judge recommending her to secure a lawyer before her upcoming hearing in December.

The following day the alleged incident, the city leader said that restoration to the popular public artwork would be expensive as the adhesive eyes could not be detached without harming the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those people of our society who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”

The mayor said the council would seek the “substantial” restoration expenses from those accountable for the vandalism.

When the sculpture was initially suggested, it received mixed reactions from the area residents due to its cost and design.

Priced at A$136,000 ($89,000; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the artwork represents a legendary giant animal, with the creators influenced by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater found in local caves that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
