Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The EU, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
