It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miamiâs iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
âThe swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,â Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
âIf we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,â Levine Cava continued. âI hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.â
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was established to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling âsix-sevenâ â inspired by a rap song lyric â often for no discernable reason. The trend became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made â6-7â its top term for the year.
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge âdistant from barbecues and spitsâ, according to the eventâs official press release.
âThis swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,â said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
âIt represents the character of Miami: vibrant, diverse, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way distinctively Miamian.â
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they marked Six Sevenâs big moment.
