NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors after the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, did not confirm he would live there right away following his triumph in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the need to dedicating my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," Mamdani said on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its vibrant cultural enclaves and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing despite the fact that he is from a prominent family.

A House Not Always Used

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.

Featuring pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments essential protections as the cost of housing exceeds the means of many residents.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
