Among every adult-oriented animated films I have ever watched, no other has lingered in my mind quite like the dread-soaked conclusion of a graphically gory and deeply subversive 2022 movie The Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spain-based writer-director crafted a dark, bleak , often savage universe with some tiny , forlorn glimmers of hope.
While Unicorn Wars feels like it came from a desire to push animation further, the filmmaker stated that it was actually a try to convey a widespread, multicultural message about “the shared root of each battle.”
That message is conveyed via a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , clearly inspired by a well-known line of lovable characters.
Being raised in a community built around aggression as well as the military-industrial complex, a lot of these animals are obsessed with slaughtering the mythical beasts, because of a holy book which states them they used to be kings of the woods, until the unicorns expelled them.
Others did not entirely bought into the propaganda, , choose to experiment with narcotics and engage sexually in the woods.
Unlike their friendly counterparts, these colorful critters show genitals and definite libidos.
For a certain especially vicious, skeptical animal, Bluey, the war against unicorns becomes a path to control — and specifically to dominance above his gentler, nicer brother Tubby.
This bear behaves aggressively and an apparent antisocial figure , and when terror overcomes his group and claims his comrades one by one, he grabs more and more influence personally, via progressively bloody, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are experiencing their own nightmare, in the form of an expanding, destructive monster in their habitat.
“In the early stages, it feels like a humorous movie,” the director stated. “But then it evolves into a more serious and melancholic movie. And ultimately, it becomes a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars commences resembling one of the more quirky movies from a renowned animator, which find a wicked pleasure in permitting cartoon characters curse, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Subsequently it evolves into something more like a more grim film from that creator, featuring progressively visual gore , a tangible relation to the actual horror of conflict.
In the finale, it is a complete extreme drama massacre.
The terror which makes the film a Halloween-friendly movie begins a lot earlier than that description suggests.
The Unicorn Wars is suited for the hardcore lovers of violence, for fans of graphic films who wish to view a film they haven’t ever watched previously, and who can handle a story that offers unflinching brutality.
Watch it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and that ending will burrow deep within you and take up residence there.
