Preparations for Trump-Putin Meeting Delayed Days Following Budapest Negotiations Proposed

Currently exist "no arrangements" for US President President Trump to confer with Russian President Putin "in the near term", a White House official has announced.

This past week the US president said he and the Kremlin leader would hold talks in Hungary's capital in the coming fortnight to discuss the war in Ukraine.

A preparatory meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "constructive" call and that a face-to-face session was not "needed".

The administration withheld any more details on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Earlier Events

Trump had discussed a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Some reports suggested his meeting with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with sources suggesting Trump had urged him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

However, on this week Trump endorsed a peace initiative backed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the war on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines in its current state," he stated.

Moscow has frequently resisted against pausing the existing front lines.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Lavrov stated on Tuesday, indicating that halting hostilities would merely represent a brief pause.

Political Perspectives

The "fundamental issues" of the hostilities required resolution, the Russian diplomat stated, using Moscow's terminology for a range of extensive requirements that encompass the acknowledgment of total Russian authority over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of Ukraine – a non-starter for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president said talks regarding the battle positions were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the sole subject that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the delivery of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's unscheduled call with Trump recently occurred before rumors that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could potentially strike deep into Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The talk about the weapons systems had turned out to be a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he added.
