It's tough to gauge how relevant of the English team's preparatory game will prove important when their Ashes battle starts not far at Perth Stadium on the coming Friday – a brief gap in geography or duration but worlds away in significance and atmosphere – but if it accomplished only enhancing Pope's confidence, that on its own has rendered the effort worthwhile.
England's No 3 – that much is undoubtedly totally clear – followed his initial innings ton by notching an additional 90 in the second innings, and what was notable was not so much the quantity of scored runs but the manner in which they were made. Periodically the player seemed imperious, smashing a twelve fours and a two of maximums, hitting the ball sweetly but with aggressive determination.
It was merely a friendly against a England Lions squad that used exactly 11 pitchers across a match played in before a few dozen of onlookers in a open field, but it was nonetheless hugely impressive. Officially, the England team, set a target of 202 after the Lions closed their second innings on 251 for six, triumphed by a margin of five wickets when Smith raced the team across the conclusion with a flurry of fours and sixes.
Zak Crawley and Duckett, the two other major first-innings achievers, both failed in the second knock, while Joe Root scored additional runs – 31 on this instance – but was not enormously more convincing, prior to being confused and subsequently bowled by Will Jacks. Harry Brook experienced an same end a little later.
Shoaib Bashir – who ended the fixture having bowled 12 bowling spells for either team – will have encountered part of the strokes he confronted quite challenging. His opening six overs versus the Lions went for 56, with McKinney feasting to deliveries that if not completely loose was certainly not very dangerous.
At the end the sixth spell of those deliveries, the English side's three other bowlers had allowed nearly exactly the same amount of runs – 57 – from 15, though the bowler became a slightly less generous in time, conceding 27 from his last six. He took a single wicket, holding a sharp, diving snare, falling to his right side, to conclude Bethell's batting stint for 70, facing 80 deliveries.
Bethell, redeeming managing merely three runs in the initial innings, was among a trio of half-centurions in the Lions team's top order. McKinney's performances from opener were more consistent than those from their number three: he notched 66 in their initial knock and went two better in their second innings, using 61 deliveries over his fifty, with five boundaries and a couple sixes, the pair from Bashir's bowling. Jacob Bethell made 68 then a poor shot to Ben Stokes at cover position, who made a stooping grab at ankle height.
Jordan Cox exhibited like reliability, and followed his initial innings' 53 with a further 57, at slightly more than a run a ball. There were a few exceptionally handsome strokes en route, featuring a straight hit and a hook off successive Brydon Carse balls to achieve his 50 runs.
After missing the first day of this fixture with a stomach issue and made only the least significant of efforts to the second day, Brydon Carse pitched brilliantly when finally provided the shot, with McKinney and Jordan Cox included in his three scalps.
