For the Cashier That Left Me Completely Wordless – Kudos to You

It was a weekend morning, and I felt sufficiently irritable, refueling the family car. The location was a common fuel stop that also functions as a convenience store, so you run the risk of waiting behind customers carrying goods of somewhat expensive items. A terrible fate to occur when the sole aim is to pay for some fuel. Terrible.

My position was fourth among those waiting. Just one cashier operating, a female attendant. Something stood out to her presence. After the ditherer at the first position had finally paid for his Viakal, his sausage roll, and some breakfast items, I was certain I heard the cashier bid him an excellent day. Strange. Maybe it was a mistake, or perhaps she spoke and meant it ironically. I pondered if perhaps she was a comrade in my fight against faff, echoing my disdain for those who delay straightforward customers such as myself.

I moved up, to third in the queue. The person ahead of our line finished pumping gas with notable efficiency. Once more it happened: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” To be precise, it was “enjoy a truly great day”. An American? Here in Stourbridge? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here says to others those exact words, or even just a nice day. Highly unusual. Rarely does one encounter many Americans knocking around Stourbridge, certainly not holding jobs in fueling spots or elsewhere.

Second in line at last. Behind a poor older woman embroiled in a right old battle with her carryall, her purchases, her handbag and her rewards card. This took an eternity. After she finished, she as well got told to have a fantastic day. Definitely from the US. I might have verified it by making a witty remark in her direction, to see if she did that reaction as they gaze at you, stoically, and say with absolute sincerity: “That’s really funny.” But I couldn’t think of a funny comment to say.

In the end, I embraced the heartfelt tone – or a performance of it, essentially the same as the same thing – as she gazed me right in the eye, piercingly, and bid me a wonderful day. It improved my mood. Beneficial indeed.
