An high-speed car that was fleeing law enforcement slammed into a busy nightspot in the early hours on the weekend, claiming the lives of four individuals and wounding 11 in a vintage district of Tampa, renowned for its nightlife and tourists.
An air surveillance unit with the local police department observed the vehicle driving dangerously on a highway at approximately 12.40am after authorities said the light-colored car had been seen street racing in another neighborhood, according to a law enforcement statement.
The state road police caught up with the vehicle and attempted to execute a tactic that involves bumping a rear panel of a escaping car to cause it to spin out, called a pit, but it was unsuccessful.
Highway patrol officers “ended pursuit” as the vehicle sped toward the vintage Ybor City area near the city center, local police said. Ultimately, the driver lost control of the car and hit more than a dozen individuals outside the establishment, police confirmed.
Three individuals perished at the location and a fourth person died at a hospital. As of the next day, a fifth casualty was hospitalized in serious state, and eight additional victims were being cared for at local medical centers but were classified as not critical, police said. 2 additional victims experienced minor harm and declined medical aid at the scene. Every one of the 15 victims are grown individuals.
“The incident today was a pointless tragedy, we are with the loved ones of the deceased and all those who were impacted,” the local top law enforcement officer expressed in a message.
Authorities named the alleged driver as 22-year the individual, who was arrested on the weekend and is being held at the local jail.
Court documents showed the suspect has been accused with 4 charges of vehicular homicide and 4 charges of aggravated evading arrest with serious bodily injury or death. Each are first-degree felonies. Legal representation was recorded for the accused.
“Our entire city is mourning this loss,” said Tampa’s mayor, who also served as Tampa’s first female top cop, in a post on social media.
“My thoughts are with the victims and families. The investigation into this crash is ongoing, and we are working to get explanations,” the statement added.
In recent years, certain regions and municipal authorities have advocated to limit the use of high-speed vehicle pursuits to protect both the public and officers. Following a increase in fatalities, a 2023 report supported by the US justice department recommended law enforcement pursuits to be minimized, noting that the risk to suspects, personnel and onlookers often outweighs the urgent need to take someone into custody.
Still, Florida has doubled down on the tactics, with the region’s road police revising its policies to relax restrictions on the application of vehicle pursuits and precision techniques. The justice department-backed report characterized these tactics as “high-risk” and “controversial”.
