A charity drive is aiming to propel a traditional song from Palestine to the peak of the festive singles chart. The effort hopes to send support to people in Gaza while also showcasing Palestinian artistic heritage.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who features on the track, stated that the release called 'Lullaby' represents a opportunity to show solidarity with Palestinians over the Christmas period. He remarked the potential for an unexpected chart success.
“That would be amazing if that occurred, yes,” he said. “I won't be completely disappointed if it doesn’t, Christmas singles are a unique phenomenon.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who performs on the reimagining of a cultural piece called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the track's defiant core message.
“It has a very special place for many individuals,” Barghouti shared. “It’s basically saying that I would rather die in dignity than live a life without freedom. That is the core idea of the song; we want to live a respectful existence that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
The song was recorded in the wake of a solidarity show held in late summer. Originally intended to be captured during the live event, the performance was omitted from the lengthy event due to the event running long.
The notable list of performers contributing to Lullaby includes a group of prominent voices from the scene. All participated in the September show, which successfully generated a significant sum for relief efforts.
Lullaby was brought to life by a group of music creators. The single features a fusion of the traditional Arabic lyrics with new English lyrics.
The organizers behind the campaign have emphasized that their aim is to generate maximum funds for a charitable pot. These donations will be allocated to initiatives supporting Palestinians through an partnering humanitarian organization.
“There is no a rigid aim,” a representative explained. “We will pursue as much as possible. Of course, the more the merrier. Every penny goes out to those in need in Gaza.”
The context in the area was described as its extreme devastation, with a vast majority of infrastructure reportedly levelled or seriously harmed.
“Against that backdrop, a handful of millions doesn’t make an enormous impact. But I think what truly matters is above all spreading knowledge of this plight and showing that another narrative exists.”
The single 'Lullaby' is set to be released this Friday. Additionally, a complete film of the charity concert will be made ready to watch on a major video platform from the 19th of December.
