Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about watching this endearing family go about their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its long-running cynical streak. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
